History of CARE’s work in South Sudan
CARE International has been present in South Sudan since 1970, long before the country’s independence. Following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, CARE expanded its operations into Jonglei and Upper Nile. In 2011, with the birth of the new nation, CARE established its South Sudan Country Office in Juba.
Since then, CARE has adapted to the evolving needs of communities by responding to humanitarian crises while delivering long-term development programs across South Sudan but with projects currently running Jonglei, Unity, Western Bahr El Ghazal, and Eastern Equatoria States as well as Reweng and Pibor Administrative Areas.
Over the decades, CARE has reached millions of people across South Sudan, supporting communities to survive crises and build more secure futures, through integrated programming, CARE addresses urgent humanitarian needs while strengthening long-term resilience in communities affected by conflict and climate shocks.
